This is the first spread for my artist’s made book, titled The Perfect Patient. This image and story “Neon Dancer” were the starting point for the overall project. The story is relatively mundane and doesn’t have significant impact until you look carefully at the image. Embedded in the image and background are numerous phrases that relate to my experiences of sexual and emotional abuse which might be uncomfortable for some. When exhibited, the small, ragged type is compelling enough to demand a close read and then the complex and conflicted meaning of the overall segment becomes more evident.
